My analog film journey began in the bathroom-converted-darkroom at my high school on San Juan Island. I reveled in the singular experience of waiting for an image to reveal itself, the element of surprise and the careful development process. Later I shifted into color film, learning how to develop it and being delightfully surprised by the unusual color results and then later sending my rolls off to be developed. The moment of being notified that the scans were ready to view was a treat I looked forward to with bated breath. Over 10 years later, my love affair with color film photography has been rekindled, and now I’m experimenting with expired film, joyously following my curiosity around shipyards in Ballard and asking my friends to pose. In the process, I’m becoming friends with the folks at Ballard Film + Foto, who have been developing my negatives. I am so excited to venture into the next phase of printing photos, collaging with them and making a book! If you are interested in ordering prints, simply email me at fi@fionasmallstudio.com.
